Buckaroo’s Story
We received information in early September of 2024 that an older lady who had died suddenly had two mini horses, a brother and sister (Buckaroo and Goldie), whom she had held onto til the end because she couldn’t part with them. There was no one to care for them, so Sound Equine Options (SEO), one of our nonprofit partners, was contacted as they had helped get her other animals adopted prior to her death.
We had an opening for taking the two mini horses, and many rescues don’t take pairs, so SEO was thrilled to help us with the medical piece of their transition to us and took them for tests, farrier care, X-rays, etc. to Eagle Fern Equine Hospital.
Turns out that they both had severe laminitis, a painful condition that affects tissues around their hooves. We picked them up two days later and brought them to our fenced in quarantine area to observe and welcome them into OGR after the designated period of time, per our accreditation process. About 13 years old, they are looking beautiful and mostly quite healthy!
At OGR, we will pay special attention to monitoring their laminitis with proper diet and exercise. We cater to minis and have many of them!
